National Equine Resource Network (NERN) Launches, Prepares to Assist Struggling Equine Welfare Organizations
Horse rescues & sanctuaries are struggling with high costs, low donations and a never-ending supply of horses. A new organization brings them hope…
Each year, more than 100,000 American horses cross the borders into Canada and Mexico where they are sold for slaughter. Countless thousands are seized by animal control officers in cases of abandonment, abuse or neglect, while an untold number of horses suffer silently in barns and backyards around the country. It seems an unfair fate for the animal that has, throughout history, given so much to mankind. Fields were plowed, battles were won, new frontiers were discovered and nations were built – all on the back of a horse.

He received the phone call at 6:30 am on a Saturday morning from the boarding stables. The woman’s voice was sad, even apologetic, as she explained the horrible accident. His horse had colicked and died two days earlier. The woman he spoke to owned the boarding stable, and had been a close friend of the man for a number of years. He had just purchased the horse a few months previously, and it seemed a logical choice to board with the woman. But now he questioned his judgment as she expressed her sadness for his loss. She stated that she had paid a friend of hers to remove the corpse from her property and bury the animal in the desert. Could she please forward him a check for $250.00 to cover the cost of the burial?

Two men in New River, Arizona were arrested Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of felony animal cruelty when it was discovered they caused the death of one horse by an injection of pool acid and starved another horse.
Detectives with Maricopa County Sheriff's animal crimes unit believe John Henkle, 54, injected a 26-year-old Arabian horse with a homemade injection of pool acid and sodium bicarbonate, causing an extremely painful death in early March, according to a press release. Laurel George, 54, is accused of assisting Henkle.

A special thanks to Jim Willis for sharing his super-secret with us!
Several people have asked if I would share my recipe for a homemade anti-pest/grooming spray for dogs and horses. May they live to regret it.
My original recipe was half apple cider vinegar and half Listerine mixed in a spray bottle. For the latter, I use generic amber-mouthwash from any "Dollar Store," or both from a discount grocery store. Then I got the brilliant idea that adding a large dash of baby oil would assist in making a good grooming spray for horses and dogs. (The scientific discovery process awes me and I realize this is how Madame Curie probably started.) You don't want to use that or any of the following on a cat, since they lick themselves (including in locations that embarrass us), or you will have a Tom-Sawyer-giving-the-cat-castor-oil experience.

I get interesting letters from people asking about the relationship between horse racing and the show world. When our farm branched into racing, a lot of our friends asked, why? They couldn’t see why we would “abandon” the show world for something they flat-out didn’t understand or appreciate. Looking back, I have to smile because it turned out that we didn’t abandon anything. We just grew.
