 Aug. 21 Adopt-a-thon aims to place nearly 200 animals in permanent homes in 12 hours
As part of their quest to stop the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of homeless pets in Maricopa County each week, the state’s two largest no-kill organizations - Arizona Animal Welfare League and HALO Animal Rescue - will try to place 180 animals at special adoption prices during a joint event next month.

 When my husband and I were newly married, we adopted an 8-week-old German shepherd. Max required just about as much work as raising a child, given the housebreaking, training, socializing and deterring her from chewing anything in sight.
Several years later, Max grew to be a wonderful family dog. At the age of 12, however, she passed away. We eventually adopted an older dog, a 10-month-old beagle from a medical research lab. She had never been outside before, but she took to housebreaking and other training like a fish takes to water.

 If you live with a shedding, dirt-digging pooch, keeping your house clean can seem like a challenge mightier than teaching an old dog a new trick. From hair imbedded in carpets to paw prints on linoleum, it may feel as if you need to follow your dog around 24/7 to keep up. But tidying after your best friend need not be a full-time job. Before you call in a maid brigade, check out these tips for clean coexistence with your canine.
Clean Pet = Clean Home
"Keeping your house clean starts with keeping your dog clean and in good health," says Gina Spadafori, author of Dogs for Dummies (John Wiley & Sons). "Keep your dog bathed and brushed. You'll minimize odors and shedding." Dogs smell better after a bath. Also, remember that hair caught in the brush or comb won't end up under the bed. Shedding occurs seasonally in dogs, typically in the fall and spring, so take extra care around April and September.

 Despite a worldwide recession, spending on pet products and services is predicted to rise nearly 5 percent this year.
"If anything, people are becoming more attached to their pets in times of uncertainty and stress," says Bob Vetere, president of the American Pet Products Association (APPA). "We are rewarding our pets for their unconditional love and companionship in human terms rather than pet terms."
More than 750 pet product manufacturers will be selling the latest dog toys, care and health products, and more at the APPA's Global Pet Expo, March 25-27, in Orlando, Fla. The show is not open to the public, but pet product buyers from around the world attend.

An old hound dropped off at the Hopalong Animal Shelter, a foster-care based shelter in Oakland, Calif., left a lasting impression. The dog had no tags but was clearly someone's beloved pet that had gotten lost and couldn't find its way back home. The shelter staff scoured the lost-and-found ads in the local newspapers and on websites. They also reviewed posters for lost dogs collected by area shelters -- all to no avail. After staying at the shelter for a few months unclaimed, the dog was facing possible euthanasia.
