Halloween
Costumes For Pets
By
Stacy Mantle
"Now
your pet can play too!"
Let me first
qualify this article by stating that I'm not a big fan of dressing
up my pets. My pets aren't big fans of it either.
However, just because I'm not a huge fan of this fad does not by any
means make it any less popular! I do need to make it clear
that you should always follow certain safety rules for Halloween
with your pets because that's what I do!
1. Your
pets should NEVER eat any type of candy, particularly
chocolate. What you makes you happy may very well kill your
pets! Chocolate is toxic to your dog and cat, and other types
of candy can cause blockages, choking and a host of other
problems. So - please make sure that all of your candy is well
out of your pets reach, and be sure that your children are aware of
the dangers of feeding your pets.
2.
Halloween is more frightening to your pets than it is to you or your
children! Threatening costumes, "make-believe
weapons" and strangers who come up to your doorway are all
perceived by your pets as legitimate threats. The best thing
that you can do for you, your family and your pets is to keep your
pets in a quiet, darkened room, until well after the Halloween
festivities are over. This includes Dia de los Muertos
as well.
3. Costumes are
fun and many people love to dress up their favorite pet as well, but
be sure that your pets costume follows these guidelines:
a) be sure that
it fits your pet properly, is not restricting and is comfortable for
your pet.
b) be sure that
the costume allows your pet to breathe naturally
c) be sure that
your pet is not stressed while wearing the costume.
d) be sure that
your pet can drink water, eat and move naturally while wearing the
costume.
e)
be sure that your pet stays
on a leash - all animals can display unpredictable behavior when
they are frightened or caught off guard, even the best natured, so
plan ahead and keep your best friend safe by staying in control of
the situation.

Remember to
keep your pets hydrated, safe and secure this Halloween. Keeping
them in a quiet room is best, but if you must show them off, do it
in a safe manner! You may want to take them on an early round,
before the rest of the neighborhood is out and about, so that you
can show off your pet costume in the best light possible, when you
and your pet are both feeling secure and confident. Then, let
the kids and the adults enjoy Halloween after dark - like the saints
and spirits of the day of the dead intended!
From
the Dogs:
Growls:
If we have to wear a costume, it better be the biker the
one. We are NOT wearing the little angel costume…
Leaps of Joy:
Do we get to go trick or treating for milk bones and doggie
toys?
From
the Humans:
Two opposable thumbs up:
Ok
- even we have to admit these costumes are great! The appeal of
dressing your dog up like a cat seems a bit cruel, but if your dogs
are acting anything like ours have been lately, it may be
justified...
Drawbacks?
First and foremost, keep your pets safe. Cute is only
fun when your pets are alive and uninjured!
