Maryland’s ALLEY CAT RESCUE TO VISIT MEXICO

TO SPAY and NEUTER FERAL CATS ___________________________________________________________________________________________

Washington, D.C. February 15, 2007  --Economics play a strong role on a society's value of animals. For instance, the human-animal bond is stronger in prosperous nations such as the United States, Canada, Germany, and England. Because basic needs are met, people in these countries have more disposable income to provide veterinary care. They also have more leisure time and education to contemplate the moral value of animals.

In less-developed countries food, education, and health care for humans are extremely scarce. People do not have the time nor the resources to concern themselves with animal welfare, as they are busy struggling to put food on the family table. Many of these people value animals more for their usefulness to humans. Sadly, many who have no income also manage to make a living on the international trade in wildlife, and they see animals as a source of income.

Mexico is one of the developing nations where companion animals are generally not afforded the same care that we give to them in the U.S.

We have been asked for assistance by a concerned citizen of Mexico who volunteers at an animal shelter. She estimates that the feral cat population in this one region is well over 100,000 and has asked Alley Cat Rescue for help. We are interested in using the vast experience that our veterinarian and Alley Cat Rescue have developed over the years and plan to take a team to spay and neuter feral cats over a four-day period.

Together Alley Cat Rescue and Dr. Pervaiz Manzoor. D.V.M. of Brentwood Animal Hospital in Maryland, have spayed and neutered over 20,000 feral and stray cats.

We hope to send a quantity of humane traps, drugs and other medical supplies. We will also need funding to help us get there and provide accommodations for the team of 10.

We plan to travel over at the end of February beginning March 2007. This timing will be good as kitten season will be just around the corner. We will be stopping thousands of unwanted kittens from coming into this part of the world, where they definitely are not needed, as no homes are available.

Alley Cat Rescue is a national nonprofit group helping ALL cats: domestic, abandoned and feral.  ACR is unique in that we work locally in our own backyard, plus we work nationwide to help others help homeless cats. International groups contact us for help as well. ACR’s founder, Louise Holton, is one of the pioneers in bringing TNR to the United States.

Benefit From Helping Strays

Free book ($12.95 value) for every $50.00 donation – first 50 people received signed copy of Conquering the Food Chain

Scottsdale, AZ (February 23, 2007) Alley Cat Rescue (ACR), an organization devoted to rescuing homeless and feral cats, have announced the launch of a new fundraising program.  As a leader in national and international rescue efforts, Alley Cat Rescue is offering the book, “Conquering the Food Chain: Living Amongst Animals (Without Becoming One  free with every donation of $50 or more.

“Our goal is to raise funds in order to continue our 10-year history of assisting feral and homeless cats,” says Louise Holton, founder of Alley Cat Rescue (ACR).  Alley Cat Rescue is one of the foremost leaders in establishing solutions to the tragedy of unwanted and abandoned cats. “We have rescued thousands of cats and placed them in loving homes,” Holton says. We assist with all aspects of feral cat care, wildlife predation and rabies control.  In addition, we provide information on cat health, cat behavior, feline diseases, and special needs.”

“I was thrilled when Alley Cat Rescue approached me about this project,” said Stacy Mantle, author of Conquering the Food Chain and owner of www.Petsweekly.com.  “Trap, Neuter and Release (TNR) is a topic that is largely misunderstood.  Many people consider feral cats to be little more than ‘pests’.  This is primarily due to an uninformed public.  Organizations such as ACR are leading the way in education and international rescue efforts, and I am proud to be associated with them on this new program.”

Mantle is no stranger to Trap/Neuter/Release efforts and has worked with a number of organizations to help overcome feral cat overpopulation.

Conquering the Food Chain: Living Amongst Animals (Without Becoming One) is largely about these experiences.  Entertaining, humorous and occasionally heart-breaking, Mantle pulls no punches when it comes to discussing her favorite topic: pets.  “If you like animals, you’ll love this book!”

More homeless cats appear on the streets as spring approaches, but with the help of TNR programs, this number will dramatically decrease. ACR plans to continue their campaign for education by supporting efforts to change laws. “By offering Stacy Mantle’s book free for every $50 donation (a $12.95 value), we hope to create additional funding to continue our efforts,” Holton says.

PupGear Corporation Introduces “Puppy Life Vest Exchange Program

PupGear floats another innovative solution to keeping pets safe around the water with  “The Puppy Life Vest Exchange Program”

Los Gatos, CA (February 6, 2007) – PupGear Corporation LLC, leading manufacturer of marine and travel-related pet products, has announced the launch of the “Puppy Life Vest Exchange Program.”  As an industry leader in recreation and travel-related pet products, PupGear offers pet owners the opportunity to make a one-time purchase of a quality PFD (Personal Flotation Device), rather than investing in several cheaper styles during the puppy’s rapid growth cycle.

“The idea for this program was developed during a West Coast Boat Show when many potential customers were reluctant to purchase a quality PFD for their dog while still a puppy,” said Theresa Marler, Vice President of Product Development for PupGear.  “A common misconception amongst dog owners is that all dogs can swim and therefore do not need a life vest.  The unfortunate truth is that even the best canine swimmers can panic, and may become disoriented or fatigued in water. While it is clear that dog owners want to purchase a quality dog vest, they simply cannot afford to purchase a new PFD at every stage of growth since prices can range from $50-80 dollars for a top quality vest.”

Understanding how easily a puppy can fall into the water from a dock, off a boat or into a pool, and knowing that we cannot keep our eyes on pets at all times, PupGear felt they needed to create a unique solution.

“Experience has taught us that the ‘one size fits all’ theory almost never works effectively,” Marler says.  According to data gathered by PupGear, nearly 7,000 dogs per year die from drowning and other water-related accidents, which is nearly triple the number of children.”  Unlike human deaths by drowning, statistics for dog fatalities and cause of death are not complete.  “Our objective is to reduce the number of dogs drowning by educating consumers in the importance of canine water safety and offering them a solution for making a one-time purchase of a high quality life vest.”

“Our Exchange Program is cost-effective and consumer-friendly,” says Michele Malm one of the company’s founders.  “Our customers buy a life vest to fit their puppy today.  Each time the puppy outgrows the life vest, customers mail it back too us and we send them the next size up.  We will continue exchanging life vests until the puppy is full-grown, and as long as the vest size stays in the same price group, the customer need only pay a small shipping cost.”

As pet ownership continues to grow, we expect to see more legislation and Coast Guard regulations requiring PFD’s for each animal passenger on board watercraft.  PupGear plans to campaign for canine water safety changes by supporting grass root efforts to change laws. “By working with the American Red Cross, FEMA and the USCG, we hope to adopt regulations that make canine PFD’s available to pet owners during catastrophic events like the recent Gulf Coast Hurricanes,” Ms. Marler said.

PupGear Corporation Introduces Pup-Grass™

A unique artificial grass for dogs in time for the Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida.

Los Gatos, CA (February 21, 2007) – PupGear Corporation, a leading manufacturer of recreation and travel-related pet products, has announced the launch of their newest product, Pup-Grass™ - a synthetic lawn for dogs.  Pup-Grass™ is easy to maintain, provides instant drainage and contains an antibacterial agent that promotes sanitary conditions.

“With the overwhelming success of our Pup-head Portable Dog Potty™, it made good sense to create a similar product for customers who had a need for larger areas of grass,” said Michele Malm, CEO of PupGear Corporation. “To ensure that we could meet the demand for our dog potty system, we needed a product that had the same drainage and bacterial resistance of the Pup-Head, and still offered durability and affordability.  Our philosophy has always been, ‘if we can’t find it, we’ll create it!’”

PupGear will unveil a new program designed specifically for pet retailers on February 22, 2007 at the Global Pet Expo in Orlando, Florida. This cutting edge program includes a dynamic Point-of-Purchase System and will allow the retailer an opportunity to purchase and sell Pup-Grass™ in consumer-friendly sizes.  Pup-Grass™ is currently available in pre-cut sizes ranging from 3’x5’ to 3’x20’ sq ft rolls.

PupGear recently announced an agreement with Legendary Turf Direct for distribution of their goods to landscape supply companies, contractors and installers.  Consumers will also be able to purchase Pup-Grass™ through various home improvement and lawn & garden stores.   Pup-Grass™ was developed as a joint effort between PupGear’s R & D team and a leading Dalton, GA textile company.

Pup-Head Indoor Dog Potty Wins 2006 Pinnacle Award

PupGear Corporation honored by Pet Age Magazine.

Los Gatos, CA (February 24, 2007) – The Pup-Head Indoor Dog Potty was the recipient of the 2006 Pinnacle Award from Pet Age Magazine, a well-known and highly respected publisher in the retail pet industry.  PupGear Corporation, a leading manufacturer of recreation and travel-related pet products, received this award for having the number one product in the beauty/health/hygiene category as determined by reader requests throughout 2006.

The winners were announced in the February, 2007 issue of Pet Age Magazine.  The annual contest is centered on products that retailers found to be, “the most unusual products that will help them stand out against their competitors.”

“We are proud to have won such a prestigious award,” said Theresa Marler, Vice President of Product Development for PupGear.  “We are confident that both retailers and consumers will find our products to be durable and cost-effective, and in certain pet cases, life-changing.”

The Pup-Head Indoor Dog Potty features a special odor-fighting design, instant drainage and an easy-to-clean tray.  It is ideal for all consumers, particularly those living in smaller areas such as RV’s, boats, apartments, or residing in extreme climates when they are unable to take their dogs out for frequent walks.

Retailing at $149.00, the Pup-Head Indoor Dog Potty is also a bargain for all who struggle to “potty-train” their pet.  The specially designed grass contains a natural agent that draws your pet to the area, and as it is level with the ground, there is no need for the pet to step up onto a platform making them more comfortable using the product.  Weighing less than 5 lbs, it is also easy to clean and maintain.

PupGear recently announced the launch of their newest product, Pup-Grass™ - a synthetic lawn for dogs.  Pup-Grass™ also provides instant drainage and contains an antibacterial agent that promotes sanitary conditions.  Designed for those who have a need for a larger grassy area, Pup-Grass™ is currently available in pre-cut sizes ranging from 3’x5’ to 3’x20’ sq ft rolls and will soon be available at pet retailers nationwide, as well as hardware stores and lawn & garden warehouses.

For more information on these products, contact Stacy Mantle (GrokQuest) at 480-200-0664.

AzCATs’ Trap, Neuter, Return continues to lead the way

Local nonprofit breaks goal to sterilize 1000 feral cats in October

(Phoenix) In honor of National Feral Cat Day on October 16th Arizona Cat Assistance Team (AzCATs), vowed to set a new record.  “Our goal was to humanely trap and end the breeding cycle for 1,000 free-roaming cats during the month of October, the organization’s largest TNR effort since its inception,” says President & CEO, Melissa Newton.  “We are pleased to announce that we not only achieved our goal, we surpassed it, ending the breeding cycle for 1,200 free-roaming cats in October.”

“AzCATs collaborates with several other rescue organizations and we knew that with their help we would succeed.” Melissa said.   One, Altered Tails sponsored 595 of the surgeries this month.  Their President and Founder Pat Carpenter said, “When Altered Tails learned of AzCATs’ goal to sterilize 1000 feral cats in October, we wanted to help.  Sterilizing feral cats is an important part of Altered Tails’ spay/neuter program, as more than 50% of the kittens turned into Animal Care and Control and AHS are born to feral and free-roaming cats.  Congratulations to AzCATs on exceeding their goal.”  The Animal Defense Leagues’ Spay/Neuter Hotline sponsored 23 surgeries and contributed toward others. The Arizona Humane Society sponsored 149 surgeries.  The Arizona Animal Welfare League and Animal Rescue Center also assisted by providing reduced fees for surgeries.  It truly was a remarkable unique collaborative effort aimed at reducing the flood of homeless kittens entering our shelters in the spring.

AzCATs is determined to keep up the pace and end the year with 8,000 free-roaming cats no longer breeding on our streets.  If you would like to help, or if you need help with free-roaming cats that you are feeding contact them at 480-968-4TNR (4867) or at www.azcats.org.

AzCATs is an Arizona non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation dedicated to humanely ending cat overpopulation.  For more information visit the web site at www.azcats.org or contact 480-968-4867 or info@azcats.org.
