Fans of the National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer with
Cesar Millan will be grateful for Cesar's Way, an
accessible guide to help new and current dog owners better
understand the needs of their beloved pets. If you are not yet a
fan, try to catch a couple of episodes of the remarkable show--you
will be amazed, impressed, and motivated to create a healthier, more
fulfilling relationship with your dog. In Cesar's Way, Cesar
explains that dogs are not complicated, and despite what various
owners think--not human. They rely on three key elements in their
lives: exercise, discipline, and affection (in that order).
"Problem dogs" can be attributed to "problem
owners," owners who don't understand and misinterpret their
dog's behavior. Cesar's Way is really a training program for
dog owners, with chapters devoted to understanding the "power
of the pack," taking responsibility for "how we screw up
our dogs," and learning how to manage aggression. Cesar's book
(a must-have for new and old dog owners) moves beyond basic
obedience school techniques, and teaches owners how to change
unwanted behavior by better understanding their "best
friends." --Daphne Durham

Through Katrina's Eyes: Poems From An Animal Rescuer's
Soul by Ed Kostro is an intimate and involved collection of
many truly heartfelt poems, including a memorable quote from
various idols and figures from history. The Maine Man:
"Until he extends the circle of compassion/To all living
things,/Man will not find peace." --Dr. Albert
Schweitzer: I met a very compassionate man from Maine/Whose
dauntless mission was extremely plain/He would stay down on
the raved Gulf Coast/Rescuing these animals that he loved more
than most/Through both the scorching heat and the freezing
rain//He was up and eagerly ready to go each dawn/While many
of us in camp still let out a yawn/And he would spend twenty
hours each day/Assisting these left behind pets in every
way/Now - three rescued dogs frolic on his lawn//And There
Were Hundreds of Volunteers/On the devastated Gulf Coast/Who
Were Just Like/This Very Dedicated/Maine Man

"Touching, poignant, humorous, and honest...all words that
describe Pieces of My
Heart. With a clear perspective, Jim Willis
offers his readers inspirational stories and unlimited
compassion. Pieces of My
Heart is a memorable and gentle work of
heartfelt emotion. This work encourages a deep introspection
on life, as well as an honest look at the world's most
dangerous predator, man, and our dealings with animals. It
inspires us, poetically and movingly, to look closer at our
actions and to take responsibility for them. I strongly
recommend this book to anyone who has loved, cared for,
rescued, or has had even the slightest concern for the
well-being of the animals we share our world with."

In this humorous and touching book about
living with a large assortment of pets, author Stacy
Mantle had me chuckling out loud to myself more than once.
The book is composed of small essay-like
chapters that are an excellent way to relax and end a busy day
with a smile on your face. One of my favorite chapters was
"Falling Into The Food Chain", where Stacy happens
to fall while vacuuming and cannot get up (this is not the
funny part...yet). Her pets think that this is quite a fun
game, and are seemingly amazed at how "into" the
game she is as she crawls to the nearest telephone. What fun!
This book makes a wonderful gift for
yourself, for all of the pet lovers in your life, and for all
of the people who don't know they are pet lovers... yet.

After reading many people's chronicles
of growing to adulthood, this is the first I have read that
animals and creatures of all kinds feature as they do all
through the memoirs author Ed Kostro aptly titles
"Curious Creatures - Wondrous Waifs". You will learn
that Ed Kostro's love for all nature's creatures great and
small stems from an early age that grew as he did into a real
passion for the bounty of life on this planet.
If you are an animal lover this book will give you the insight
of one man's view of living with all that is not human. And if
you just take animals as a matter of fact, this book will
undoubtedly give you fruit for thought, as you will never see
an animal in the same light again and realise why some one
could be so engrossed in the animal kingdom although his life.
All, whether an animal lover or not, will find this book
"Curious Creatures - Wondrous Waifs a worthy read, as all
will find each chapter a story in its self. An exceptional
book by an extraordinary man.
